From the Fillmore East,an epic example of primal Dead. This is an awesome show with a hair-raising performance and stellar matrixed sound quality....a perfect example of why the Dead are my all time favorite band. Some of you may recall that J Mahoney posted about a show that Pete K,Goose and Co. were doing that weekend. She said they were serving up some 1970 style dead. I replied back that I doubted that. I think people missed the point ,though. That wasn't an attack on the musicians, but rather a statement to the fact that four guys in a bar will never recreate the sound of vintage dead....as you listen to this little set, you will see the true Grateful Dead, not the watered down version that 90 % of people think is what the Grateful Dead is all about, but rather a darker scarier fire-breathing beast that peels open your head and digs into the deepest catacombs of your imagination.... anyway, here it is...... www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=E465866446A98273

so did anyone listen to this...I'm hearing it now and what a "Dark Star"...I found it to be far more invigorating than the Feb. 13 Fillmore East version that is so legendary.
and what a smart crowd....the audience remains silent for all the intricacies of "Dark Star" and when the band finally plays the last few notes that signal the arrival of "St. Stephen", the crowd bursts into applause...then these fuckers get this rhythmic clapping thing happenin' on "Lovelight" and it's just like another percussive instrument in the mix. could you imagine trying to get a thousand of todays poser hippies to clap in unison ,in rhythm ??...they'd be too busy showin' off their nuggets and tryin to dance and look cool at the same time to do that shit... and watch the kids dancing at shows now and you'll see they have no rhythm. I've often re-told the tale of a MM&W show I went to where the band was in the midst of the total deep space abstract jam, and here's this kid, boppin away like there's 120BPM disco beat playing, doing the same generic "hippie" dance he did for the other 3 hours of the show.
but back to this awesome show..so both the band and crowd are electric, and at the end you can hear them play "Get Together" by the Youngbloods over the PA system when Pigpen gets the last word. "Why don't you guys go home and fuck somebody?"

It takes a certain mindset to appreciate a Dead show like this. If you just take it at face value it's an OK listen with some slow parts where the band is slow and quiet and trying to be "trippy". But if you're able to concentrate on the show as a whole, cohesive performance it has a theatrical quality that has settings and movements that relate to one another and form a complete piece of music. Oh yeah, it rocks too!
Sometimes I have a bad attitude about the Dead. They have beaten the dead horse with Phil and Friends, and "The Dead" and they haven't released anything new. Do I even need to say Joan Osborne? They have become a nostalgia act and I wish they would just call it quits totally. Maybe they already have and I just don't know it because I stopped paying attention. I listened to Dicks Picks 17 or something the other day and I was really bummed. The show was terribly sloppy and out of tune. Donna was fuckin screaming some crap and it was the same old shit I'd heard a hundred times. I hope they never release another Dicks Picks if they can't find the real gems.
But listening to this show is a real treat. It really is a great example of the power the Dead can have. They were the most powerful musical force around at the time of this show. Can anyone (besides Floyd) create a performance that is so deep and enthralling? It's almost like the rest of the world doesn't exist while they are playing. Time stops and all your attention is focuses on the little world they are creating with the music and when it stops you're realesed back into reality. Someone please tell me where I can find this sort of experience today. I really miss it and I don't know where to get it.
