I'm sure weve had one of these somewhere before, but I thought I would make an official beer thread. Ill start it off with this little number I had the other night......and couldnt finish!!! Im so ashamed. I already had a few beers (Scottish Reds and Cascade Pale Ales) at Rhodell's and since they close early we went next door to Kelleher's. I had heard of the Kentucky Breakfast from Ben, a bartender at Rhodell's who also worked for a beer distributor in Champaign. It is a VERY limited run of Bourbon Cask aged stout and Kellehers had 1 bottle left. Here are the specs: A bit of backwoods pleasure without the banjo. This stout is brewed with a hint of coffee and vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels. Our process ensures that strong bourbon undertones come through in the finish in every batch we brew. We recommend decanting at room temperature and best enjoyed in a brandy snifter. Specs: 10% ABV 25 IBUs Color: Black Unfiltered Cellar: 2 years Availability: Quarterly (limited production, pre-order only) Serving temperature: 42 f Glassware: Brandy snifter I cant stand the smell of Jack Daniels and the taste makes me wanna puke but I thought a little bit of cask aging wouldnt really impart that strong of a burbon flavor. Well, it did and we didnt really agree too much. Especially since my previous beers at the brewery had been refreshing, hoppy and crisp. I made it about half way through, poured it into a fresh glass and offered it to my friend Steve, who also is a Rhodell's bartender and had no problem finishing it off. I confessed my shame, switched back to the pale ales and finished the night strong. Please forgive me.

I just got back from Indianapolis last night and visited a nice little microbrewery while I was there. Barley Island is about 18 miles north of Indianapolis in a small town called Noblesville. It reminded me a lot of the Stagger Inn. Roughly the same size and decor. There was even a NAPA Auto Parts store adjoining the back parking lot. The crowd also seemed similar to what one might find in the Stagger on a Wednesday night. The first beer I tried was their Cask Ale - a rotating selection from the Beer Engine. This month it was Blackberry Bourbon Stout. This was one of tastier beers I've had in a while. The beer is Barley Island's Brass Knuckles Oatmeal Stout, aged in Oak Bourbon barrels with 20 pounds of locally grown, organic blackberries. I tried a 4 oz. glass first, as I (much like Warreng) was a little leery of the Bourbon taste. I enjoyed a full glass with my Fish n' Chips - their house specialty. Very good beer battered fish with fresh cut waffle fries or house-cut chips. I had the waffle fries. Next I tried their Dirty Helen Brown Ale. It was described as American Style Ale, Copper Penny Color. It had a more distinct taste than Goose Island or Sam Smith's Brown Ale, but wasn't quite as smooth. I wish I would have had a pint of the Dirty Helen with the Fish n' Chips, and then had the Blackberry Bourbon Stout afterward, but...oh well. I had already sipped a sud (or two) back at the hotel before I left, so I only had those two beers while there. It was well worth the drive though. I was determined to drink some local beers in Indy, so I Googled: microbrewery Indianapolis. It gave me six results, five of which were in the actual city and all were chain restaurants/breweries. What a bunch of crap. I'm glad I ended up at Barley Island Brewing Co. If you ever find yourself having to go to Indianapolis for some reason, I would suggest this place to anyone! barleyisland.tripod.com/I have a couple of crappy pictures to put up once I get them off of my phone.

I drank too many Natural Lights last night. I paid for it at work today.
Hey...this is the beer thread, right? Nobody said it has to be about good beer.

you guys are breaking my cold black heart. family dynamics are such a drag. i think of all the sacrifices the married with kids crowd makes to end up being divorced and pissed and broke, and it saddens me. but, boys, you can't say that you weren't warned. girls are a little crazy. you had to know all along that we'd ultimately ruin your life. (except you, mr. v., you and the lovely lilo are the exception that proves the rule, of course--happy anniversary again, by the way, and many, many more) but, you all seem to be well past being on the mend, so i'm sure you'll do fine, and nothing is ever as fun as getting over a breakup, no?
i must apologize to mr warren for my lack of correspondence. i also must admit that this has officially been the busiest summer i've ever had. i managed to wrap my final few masters courses while also teaching a class and working the month long fiasco many affectionately refer to as the all star game. i did have obama's secret service team under my charge, and i must say that those bastards are younger and better looking than the movies lead you to believe. I'm also still constantly seeing the dr and the physical therapist because apparently things got a little more jacked than we all realized while i was unable to walk. speaking of going out with a bang, i need to work out some sort of deal with that asshole because these tri-weekly visits are about to break me. anywho, while i sincerely appreciate the invitation, i will be unable to attend the sermon in peoria because i am poor and will have to spend the time working since siue is going to try to take every dollar from me that the pt guy doesn't. but it was very sweet of you to think of me, i remember that i listened to your message in a fog on my way to work entirely too early and it was indeed the highlight of that day.
jakey and gaddis, i know you boys have a birthday sometime around right now, so happy birthday, gentlemen! warren, when is your birthday? i don't think i know that one. and, of course, mr. v, happy early bday to you, as well--i know how important it is to you that everyone make a huge deal out of your birthday. i miss all of you boys very much. hell, this summer i miss almost everyone i know very much.

I don't.
Just purchased a keg of Schlafly's Heffe. I guess one beer is enough for the night. Just make it a large.
