look for this fight to do record PPV buys.
after nearly a year, couture is returning to the UFC to once again defend his heavyweight title.
a title that he won in storybook fashion, coming back from retirement @ age 40.
so he could come back to UFC and fight any heavyweight slob and there would be interest.
BUT BROCK?
oh jesus.
now let's take the average mixed martial arts or UFC fan.
somebody who's watched alot of fights, but doesnt watch every PPV or TV show,or read dirt sheets or internet stuff, but knows and understands what they are watching during a fight.
Randy Lueker would be a good example. He watched the UFC in it's infancy in the mid 90s(along with myself and WarrenG) and is always down to watch fights, but doesn't have cable or follow the business, so he's not really up on all the current talent.
But he knows who Randy Couture is.
For the last 11 years,he's known about Randy Couture, who has always been a fixture in MMA since it went mainstream.
And as an average fan of pro wrestling,he knows Brock the same way. Not so much because Brock was a fixture or huge star, but because he was so freakishly huge and tattooed and he was a WWE Champion. I'm kinda off on a rant, but the point is that hundreds of thousands of Rantell's will have more than a passing interest in this fight
Now in the last few years,Couture has reached legend status, from his trilogy with Chuck Liddell and subsequent retirement, to his return to win the title, and then successfully defending it against Gabe Gonzaga. Gonzaga made himself a name with one vicious kick to the head of Mirko Cro Cop.
I remember the Couture/Gonzaga fight and even though I knew who was gonna win when I watched it the next day,It was still an exciting fight. You couldn't help but love Randy Couture and you didn't want to see him get beat up or take a vicious shot like Cro Cop. But it was Couture who bloodied big Gabe and pulled out a victory that had me fist pumping and whooing.
And I know I've talked at length about watching Brock's MMA bouts, which I find exhilarating as both a huge pro wrestling and MMA fan.
Once again to the point,I gotta have a party for this fight.
In other news, Matt Hardy and Jericho both picked up gold in the scramble matches last night....good for them.really.
